RE: AC/DC Compressor Refer vs 3 way power refer

The compressor driven 12v models are becoming more popular. They are typically better insulated and assuming multiple batteries are very efficient. As stated, they can be run off level. Truckers have been using them for years now because of their reliability. If I had to replace my unit I would think seriously about a compressor model.

RE: Any Way to Clean Fiamma Awning End Caps?

As I stated earlier I have used waterless handcleaner in the past with good results. Having just returned from a 4 month 11,800 mile trip, yesterday I cleaned the end cap. It took the bugs off but the stain is permanently in the plastic now. I let the cleaner sit on it for ten minuets and then scrubbed with a plastic brush, no good. Apparently the composition of the plastic is the culprit, bleach may penetrate enough to remove the stain but that is too much trouble for me. Maybe what they say is true,"A clean end cap is the sign of a disturbed mind".

Try hand cleaner, the kind mechanics use. Get the kind without pumice in it.

RE: Need all your expertise!

That was his asking price, not his bottom line. We payed $58,000 3 years ago for a new Excell, and things have probably not changed all that much. It all depends on how much he wants the deal. We tried 3 different dealers before we bought. The standard for the RV world used to be 20% below list price for a place to start bargaining.

RE: Post Your 'B' Sightings Here

I ran across this in Ohio a few months ago. I have just returned so this is the first chance to post it. I had a chance to talk to the owner but not to see the inside. It would have been interesting to see it. He claims to have traveled most of the U.S. By the way, he looked like he should be traveling in a rig like this, nice guy.

RE: Favorite homemade gizmo for your B

I have made a lot of changes to our 05 PleasureWay, but the favorite is not having to worry about leaving the fridge on 12V when shutting the engine off. I installed a relay that shuts off the power to the 12Vheater in the fridge when the engine is off. The fridge is still on but drawing very little electricity. The worry about depleting the coach batteries is gone.

RE: Digital Converter Box

If you install one you should know that it may not always work. They are wonderful when you have a good signal. If you are parked in a spot where you would get a little snow on the old set up then you may not be able to watch tv at all with an HDVT. It requires a good signal. Without it the picture breaks up and the sound goes away. We are into week 5 of a trip and we get HDTV about half the time. I unplug it the other half and go back to a regular signal.

RE: Objects Are Closer Than They Appear

I purchased one of those plastic bulls eye devices that sticks onto your rear window. It gives a wide angle view out the back. It is handy for backing up at times but the best part is for passing. When you can see the front of the vehicle you are passing you know you have passed it. Most RV places have them.

RE: B's vs. retirees with A's & C's...

One day you also will get to retire. Currently we are traveling in our B and if we get to a place we like we may stay a week or two. We have done it before, you don't have to have an A.

RE: Is Downsizing really do-able?

It's in your mindset. We came down from a 35' A with 2 slides after 13 years of fulltiming. We miss the A but would not go back. We have no place to park it now that we have a home again. I disagree about large rigs not being for traveling. We crossed the country 18 times one way or the other and there were few places we could not go that we wanted to go. Small Forest Service campgrounds were about the only places we really missed. The better mileage is a big plus now of course, but we do miss having a real bathroom. No matter what everyone says, having a small car to run around in when you get there is easier than unhooking everything every time you want to go to the store. That being said, we love our PleasureWay Excell and today we leave for a 4 month trip.

RE: When is best time to purchasing a Roadtrek?

Dick B is right, also, if you have followed the news, RV dealers are hurting for sales. Shop around and find the best deal, there should be some good ones out there.

RE: Leveling with scissor jacks

I have had scissor jacks on at least 4 trailers. They work well for stabilizing and for a small amount of leveling. For a couple of inches at the back corner you would be all right, but that might only be an inch at the rear wheel, depending on the amount of overhang. They will lift, but it takes a lot of strength and gets worse the farther you go. If the ground is soft or muddy you will need a wide board to keep them from sinking. It could be done, I don't know that I would want to go to the trouble myself. Most trailer people use boards to level and the jacks to stabilize.

RE: 2d Auxilliary Battery: Necessity or Nicety?

As you can see from the responses one battery can be made to work. I recently added a second, not because we need it but because there was a convenient spot for it and I thought it might come in handy. I would suggest going with one for awhile and finding out how it works. If you really need two you can always find a spot somewhere for the new one.

RE: Another towing question--horse trailer

Mike, electric trailer brakes work, just barely. I would go for the best controller you can get. Try Camping World, and get the trailer brakes checked to make sure they are adjusted correctly. You will be towing a lot of weight for the size van you are driving,I would weight the rig and then check to see what your combined rating is. Just because it is rated to tow 5000 lb does not mean you should. It depends on how much weight the towing vehicle is loaded down with also. Your rig will tow it if everything is set up right. A tranny cooler is nice, but I like to have a tranny temp gauge. Without it you are always just guessing. I don't know how the Sprinter is set up as far as coolers go. We will be in the Flagstaff area soon, coming from Wickenburg.
Good luck, sounds like fun.

RE: Rolling with Refer - Propane or DC?

The reason the fridge has a 12V function is so that you can use it while driving. It works very well. As the manual says, do not use it while parked, the battery will not last long. As to using propane while driving, lots of folks do, I do not. Mine is always turned off while moving. It's kind of like smoking, you might smoke all your life and not get lung cancer. I don't want to take a chance on it.

RE: Roadtrek Fueling Problems

When you put gas in he tank the air it displaces has to have somewhere to go. Yours is obviously blocked somewhere. When you use the old type of nozzle it lets some of the air out the filler tube. If you can get to your tank see if there is a vent tube that exits the tank and hooks into the filler tube near the top. Sometimes these are rubber and can be kinked. I am not familiar with the Chevy setup but since this does not seem to be a common Chevy problem I would guess that it is something like I described.
Good luck.

RE: tow bar vs. a tow dolly? pro ? con?

I can see no reason to put a Jeep on a dolly. It is made to be towed 4 down. The only real problem is not being able to back up. That is more than made up for by not being hassled with the dolly. Hook up is fast and easy and when you park you don't have to worry about where to put the dolly. Yes, you should have brakes, especially when towing with something as small as a B. There are several on the market that will work, we all have our favorite. Go to Camping World on line and look at their selection.
Good luck.

RE: Waking Up to a Flat Tire

We use a lot of it in Arizona for off road driving because of cactus spines. I have had mixed results. On one small tire I put 2 cans in and never could stop it leaking. Not only that I could not find the leak with soapy water, but in a month it would be flat. A new tire solved the problem. I have heard that tire shops do not like to work on tires with it in them. That being said, everyone I know uses it in their ATV tires.
